Hubballi: The Karnataka State Commission for Women has registered a case against the police action in Navalgund taluk of Dharwad during the agitation over the Mahadayi dispute.

It will submit a comprehensive report to the State government within two-three days.

Speaking to presspersons after visiting Yamanur village in Navalgund and hearing the grievances of women and the elderly, Manjula Manasa, chairperson of the commission, said that the commission would speak to all the affected persons and get details from officials before submitting a comprehensive report about the episode.

Ms. Manjula Manasa said that it was painful to see women and elderly persons of Yamanur sustaining blows. It was a matter of regret that the police had made innocent people to suffer in their bid to take action against those involved in violence.

She said that directions had been issued to the district Health and Family Welfare Department to provide free treatment to the affected people.

Ms. Manjula Manasa said that she would also take individual complaints from the affected people and seek details from the police on the kind of cases filed against those arrested.

Later, holding a meeting at the Hanuman Temple in the village, she promised the residents that the commission would safeguard their interests. Earlier on her arrival at the village, some village residents sought to know what took her so long to visit them.

They also had an argument with Navalgund Tahsildar Naveen Hullur and as tempers ran high, a few elders intervened to pacify them.

Meanwhile, the former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition in Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar visited Arekurahatti, Yamanur, Alagavadi and Navalgund and spoke to the people affected by the police action.

However at few places, Shettar’s visit was questioned by some farmers and at Navalgund he had to wind up his visit early after visiting the houses of Ishwar Santi and Gangappa Hallad who are in jail now. People in Arekurahatti and Yamanur told Mr. Shettar that they wanted politicians to take steps to get the jailed persons released.
