DK Shivakumar seeks report on LPG price hike, flags rising industrial fuel costs

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Sunday said he had sought a report from officials on the recent hike in gas prices and expressed concern over the increase in the price of industrial gas and diesel.

Domestic cooking gas LPG price has been raised by Rs 29 per cylinder, marking the second increase in three months as state-owned fuel retailers continue to grapple with elevated global energy costs.

"I have sought a report on the gas (LPG) price hike. More than that industrial gas and industrial diesel prices have increased at an alarming rate. I am getting a report on it, I will speak on the matter tomorrow," Shivakumar told reporters in response to a question on the gas price hike.

Indian households continue to pay among the lowest prices for cooking gas globally despite a sharp rise in international LPG prices triggered by disruptions in West Asia, the union government said on Sunday, a day after increasing domestic LPG prices by Rs 29 per cylinder.

The increase follows a Rs 60-per-cylinder hike on March 7, taking the cumulative hike to Rs 89 per 14.2-kg cylinder. State-run oil marketing companies were estimated to be losing about Rs 703 on every LPG cylinder sold before the latest revision.
