Karwar: Dharwad bench of Karnataka High Court has ordered a stay on 'permanent prohibition' order issued by the district administration in 200 meter range around deputy commissioner's office in Karwar.

Briefing reporters, in Karwar, on Thursday, Goankar said on February 4, 2015, the then deputy commissioner Ujwalkumar Ghosh had imposed prohibition around the DC office during a dharna by Anganwadi workers. Again on August 14, 2015, prohibition was imposed around DC office in wake of another dharna. As per law, such prohibition can be imposed for a maximum of 15 days. But prohibition was continued for around eleven months.

This order of the court has been welcomed by activists, CPI District Secretary Yamuna Goankar said. “This move was an attempt to cramp democratic struggle", she alleged.

After the imposition of prohibition in 200 meters around deputy commissioner's office in Karwar, people were asked to hold dharnas in the children's park on the beach.

Therefore, activists had approached Dharwad High court appealing to lift the 'permanent prohibition'. A single judge bench of Justice P Dinesh kumar heard the case and ordered a stay on July 26. Also, it has issued show cause notice to three defendants", Ms Goankar said.
