Located 20km from Kaiga power plant, Haruru has no power

KARWAR: Haruru in Uttara Kannada district is a tiny village with no mobile connectivity or a landline phone. Electricity is available for only three to four days a month and villagers have to rely on candles or lanterns the remaining days. There is no electricity during the rainy season.

Haruru receiving very little electricity is ironic, considering its proximity to both Kaiga Atomic Power Station and Kadra Hydroelectric Power Plant, which lie approximately 20km from the village.

Two other villages close to Haruru, Jenugule and Kabbinagule, each with a population of 100, too suffer from the same problem. When Karwar MLA Satish Sail paid a visit to Haruru on Wednesday, the people demanded the installation of a mobile tower.

"Since our village is situated atop a hill, we do not receive signals either from Kaiga or Kadra," said a primary school teacher.

Satish Sail assured the villagers he would talk to the authorities at BSNL, with regard to setting up a mobile tower in the village.
