Bhatkal: Maari jatra festivities turned dull when a 13-year old teenager drowned at Jali beach at Bhatkal on 28th July at around 5.30 pm.

The deceased has been identified as Manjunath Govardhan Naik, a student of 7th standard Jali Kodi government school.

As per the sources, 4 teenagers were swimming at the Jali beach before the commencement of Maari idol immersion at 5pm when a huge wave swept them away. Locals who were present at the beach, waiting the maari immersion, rescued the four boys immediately but one boy breathed his last en route to the government hospital.

It is reported that Govardhan had lost his parents and was residing along with his siblings at his grandparents house.
