Karwar: "Ban orders clamped on sand mining from June 1 to July 21, has been extended upto September," said Deputy Commissioner Nakul S S during the district sand mining committee meeting held at his office in Karwar on Wednesday.
The environmentalist have stated that during monsoon, fish lays eggs and nurtures fishing’s and hence, it would not right to allow sand mining during this period. This apart, several river in Uttara Kannada are brimming and it would cause more problems if sand mining is allowed. Hence, ban order will continue till September.
Nakul said, there were complaints that illegal transportation of sand was taking place on the beds of Sharavati River. A temporary check-post should be setup at Kalasinamute to see that the sand from the district is not transported to other regions. He also instructed Assistant Commissioner to visit the place for inspection and the mechanised boats of the people indulged in illegal sand mining should be seized and legal action should be taken.
Nakul said, the trucks transporting sand have been fixed with GPS to check illegal sand mining. During the first stage, GPS would be installed to 10 boats, he said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner H Prasanna, Mines and Geology additional Deputy Director Mohammed Nasrullah, Additional SP Devraj and others were present.
