Udupi: Over 40 houses suffered partial to major damage, while about 250 trees fell and about 100 electricity poles were damaged owing to strong wind in the Padigar-Perdoor belt in Udupi taluk between 1.30 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday.
According to Udupi Taluk Office, as many as 12 houses in Perdoor village had to bear the brunt of the strong wind. Houses belonging to Usha Shetty, Sumati Padigar, Asha G., Sugandhi Poojary, Leela Shetty, Bhoja Rama, Vilasini Shetty, Baby N., Rajivi Narayana, and Jayalakshmi Shetty had their tiled roofs blown away. The total damage was estimated at Rs. 2.1 lakh.
Two other residents in the area, Mallika Poojary and Gulabi Poojary, said that their houses had been damaged when trees fell on them. The loss to these two houses has been estimated at Rs. 25,000. A few shops have also suffered damages.
Traffic disrupted
A large number of uprooted trees fell on Malpe-Tirthahalli National Highway that runs from Padigar to Vaddameshwar, disrupting traffic. Locals helped the police and Forest Department personnel clear the road at 10 a.m.
“Some 80-year-old trees have been uprooted by the winds in the Perdoor-Padigar area. Luckily, there has been no loss of life. According to preliminary estimates, the damage to the houses itself is above Rs. 10 lakh,” said T.J. Guruprasad, Udupi Tahsildar.
Vinay Kumar Sorake, Kaup MLA, visited the spot and said that he would try to provide a maximum compensation amount to all those whose houses had been damaged.
Kundapur taluk
According to the Kundapur Taluk Office, a house belonging to one Shashikala Kanchan was badly damaged owing to heavy rain and strong wind at Marvanthe village. The loss had been estimated at Rs. 2.6 lakh.
The houses of Abdul Qadri, Husainar and Pushpa Poojary in Beejady village were damaged. The total loss to these three houses had been estimated at Rs. 70,000.
In Gujjady village, the houses of Achyut Kharvi and Chandra Kharvi were damaged, when tiles were blown away. The loss to both the houses taken together had been estimated at Rs. 25,000.
Karkala taluk
A huge tree fell on the Ajekar Sahakari Seva Sangha building and its godown at Ajekar in Karkala taluk. Items stored in the godown such as rice, wheat, fertilizers and arecanut, were damaged in the process.
