Puttur: The Additional district and sessions court sentenced a man to death, on Friday August 12, who was convicted of murdering a woman and her child and stealing their gold ornaments back in 2008.
As per the obtained details, resident of Shiradi Addahole Jayesh alias Jayesh Kanta alias Shakir alias Sahir (26) was found guilty of murdering his cousin Lohith's wfe Soumya (23) and their three-year-old son Jishnu on August 2, 2008.
As per the complaint filed in Uppinangady police station, it was learnt that Lohith was returning from work on the evening of August 2, 2008 when he saw Jayesh hurriedly leaving his house. Upon entering the house, he found his wife and child lying in a pool of blood. He also noticed that his wife's gold chain weighing 10 grams and other ornaments were missing.
After the double murder, Jayesh fled to Kerala, where he had changed his name to Sahir and lived with a woman named Rahiya.
On October 7, 2012, Jayesh and his friend Anas were arrested at Aratupu for assaulting women under the influence of alcohol. While Anas was caught by the police, Jayesh managed to escape. The locals who gave him a chase and found him hiding on a coconut tree. The fire brigade was called and finally he was arrested by the police. Upon investigation, it came to light that he was an accused in the Puttur double murder case.
He was arrested on October 9, 2012 in Kerala by a police team led by the then sub-inspector Ravi B S who is presently the inspector at Puttur rural police station, along with the help of the Kerala police.
The invesigation was taken up by the then circle inspector Suresh Kumar B (presently serving in Mangaluru east police station) who succeeded in recovering the stolen gold and gathering 40 witnesses and evidences. The chargesheet was filed on October 17, 2012. Advocate Uday Kumar was the public prosecutor in the case.
It is learnt that Jayesh had tried to escape from the court during the hearing in April this year but was caught by the public and handed over to the police.
