Bhatkal: A 13-year-old girl died after her dupatta (veil) accidentally got entangled around her neck while she was playing on a swing. This tragic incident occurred on Thursday in Sabhathi village of Ternamakki near Murudeshwar in Bhatkal taluk.
The deceased has been identified as Praneetha Jagannath Naik, a Class 7 student.
According to sources, due to a school holiday declared following heavy rains across coastal Karnataka, Praneetha was at home and playing with a makeshift swing. She reportedly used her dupatta as the swing rope. During play, the cloth got tightly wrapped around her neck, causing her to collapse due to suffocation.
Family members and locals rushed to help and tried to shift her to the hospital immediately. However, she is said to have died on the way, before receiving any medical attention.
At the time of the incident, her mother was away for work, and her father was employed in another state, due to which no immediate help was available at home.
The sudden death of the young girl has left the local community in deep sorrow. Teachers, classmates, and villagers have expressed grief, remembering Praneetha as a bright and cheerful student.
Her body has been kept at the Bhatkal Government Hospital, and the post-mortem will be conducted on Friday after her father's arrival.
Murudeshwar police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
